Clear containers can be great for the visual folks among us; if you usually have it (whatever "it" is) out, you can use transparent containters to have it out without the mess. My ideal is a system that lets me see everything easily, yet can be covered over or put away easily so I don't have to look at it when I'm not working. Think bookshelves that have a door, or open files with a lid.

If you are a stacker, try buying a clear tub and putting your papers in it. At the very least, they won't cascade off the desk and kill the dog.
